Returning to Chautauqua following his lauded 2017 performance with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán excels in both the classical and jazz worlds as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber music collaborator, prolific recording artist and performer of his own electrifying compositions. His older brother, violinist Ilmar Gavilán, was recognized as a child prodigy and left Cuba at age 14 to begin his distinguished career as a chamber musician, concerto soloist, and improvisor. Following his first-place win at the Sphinx Competition in Detroit, Ilmar co-founded Harlem Quartet, where he has served as first violinist since the ensemble’s debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006.
Most recently, the brothers are the subject of a new PBS documentary called Los Hermanos / The Brothers, part of which was filmed on-site at Chautauqua. It tracks Aldo and Ilmar’s parallel lives in the U.S. and Cuba, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together on stages across the U.S., including in Chautauqua’s own Amphitheater.
Their Chautauqua Chamber Music duo recital will feature a broad assortment of Aldo’s original compositions and improvisations.
