The passion that Aldo López-Gavilán feels for academic music and jazz has led him in his work as a composer, to a great extent, to unite both worlds. Thus, in his works are examples of something that could be classified as chamber jazz, improvisation is generally controlled because in his songs almost everything is written. It is not that there is no space for each instrumentalist to give free rein to their creativity, as it has to happen in jazz, but that happens at certain moments of the pieces, in which there are many passages conceived in unison or by voices, beautiful melodic lines with sometimes surprising jumps, and moments in which repetitive elements are used and in gradual development, a typical procedure of minimalism.
Somehow, we find the features mentioned above again in De Todos Los Colores y También Verde. However, I think that of the different phonographic productions made by Aldo López-Gavilán this is the one that gives the greatest space to improvisation, although sometimes his passion for symphonic atmospheres and textures is also present.
The album contains nine tracks, we recommend paying special attention to the pieces Arboles En El Aire, the album’s sound cover and where guest guitarist Jorge Luis Valdés “Chicoy” intervenes with an excellent solo; Green Sky, with highlights for the saxophonist, the drummer and Aldo himself; Danza del Dragón Violeta, a big favorite and which is a true jewel due to its morphological structure and a classic example of López-Gavilán’s compositional style; Caipiríñame, precious bossa nova with the intervention of two guests, the repeating «Chicoy» on guitar and the clarinetist Alejandro Calzadilla; The Forgotten Tune, an ideal cut for the bass player to show off; and La Jutia Preguntona, a high-flying collective work and outstanding performance by both Aldo from the piano and the saxophonist when interpreting the melodic line of the theme and improvising.
Thus, when we arrive at the last piece of the phonogram, that is, A Cuban in London, we have enjoyed a delicious album on its bill, one of those that delight lovers of purposeful music, a sample of an active scene unfortunately not promoted among us as it should be and for which a part of the current Cuban musicians moves.
